About

Hello, I'm Mara.

I'm a photographer working with landscape, architecture and still life. I grew up on a windy coast and still prefer weather to sunshine.

Most of my commissions come from architects, interior studios and small makers who want their work photographed slowly and honestly. In between, I make series that take a season or more to finish.

The studio is one room with one north window. That is where every still life on this site was made.

How I work

01

Wait for it

Light does the work. I return to a place until it is right, rather than forcing it on the day.

02

Keep it true

Straight lines stay straight, colours stay close to what was there, and nothing is added that was not.

03

Fewer, better

A shoot ends with a short, finished edit, not a folder of five hundred near-duplicates.

In the bag

  • Medium format film camera, 45mm, 80mm and 150mm lenses
  • Full-frame digital body with 24mm and 45mm tilt-shift lenses
  • 100mm macro for still life and detail
  • Carbon tripod, cable release, a lot of warm layers
